Buyer's Guide
Ketryx alternatives: overlay vs one system of record
How to evaluate Ketryx alternatives for medical-device teams — when a compliance overlay over Jira/GitHub/TestRail wins, and when consolidating onto one system of record is the better bet.
Teams searching for a Ketryx alternative are usually deciding architecture, not feature checklists. Ketryx and platforms like traceunified aim at continuous traceability, Part 11 evidence, and audit-ready records — they get there with opposite bets.
The architectural fork
- Compliance overlay — keep Jira, GitHub, TestRail (and similar); generate traceability and documentation across connectors.
- System of record — author requirements, tests, risk, SBOM (and often MBSE) in one database so the thread is intrinsic.
Neither is universally right. Overlay minimizes disruption. System of record minimizes the stack you license, validate, and reconcile.
What Ketryx does well (credit first)
- Lets engineers stay in tools they already use
- Strong medical-device positioning (IEC 62304, Part 11, risk, SBOM)
- Generates evidence and documentation across connected systems
Any fair alternative evaluation starts there.
Criteria for Ketryx alternatives
- Where is work authored? Overlay sources vs native records
- Where does traceability live? Connectors vs one data model
- Native MBSE / test execution? Or still delegated underneath?
- SBOM — native on both sides for many options; ask whether CVE impact reaches requirements and ISO 14971 risk automatically
- Stack cost — overlay license plus everything underneath, vs one platform
- Validation surface — one system vs layer + N integrations
Common directions
| Direction | Fits when | Watch-outs |
|---|---|---|
| Stay on Ketryx | Non-negotiable: keep current eng tools | You still run the underlying stack |
| Stay on Jama/Polarion/etc. + tighten process | Already deep in one ALM | SBOM/MBSE may still be external |
| Pure SCA / SBOM scanners | Vulnerability inventory is the only gap | Won’t replace ALM or Part 11 thread |
| One system of record (traceunified) | Ready to consolidate | Change management for eng workflows |
SBOM note
Ketryx includes SBOM. So do connected ALM platforms that put components on the same thread as risk and requirements. Pure scanners (Snyk, Black Duck, FOSSA, Dependency-Track, etc.) compete for SCA inventory, not for “overlay vs system of record.” If your pain is FDA 524B + impact to hazards and requirements, evaluate SBOM inside the compliance architecture — not only the scanner.
Questions to ask every vendor
- Show requirements, a test run, a risk, and an SBOM component in one governed model — or explain the connectors that synthesize that view.
- Change a requirement or land a CVE — what flags automatically?
- What must we keep running underneath your product?
- How do Part 11 signatures attach without a second system of record?
- What’s the honest migration / consolidation path from our current stack?
