Migration

Migrate from Codebeamer: leave the config tax behind

How to migrate from PTC Codebeamer into traceunified — ReqIF export, Import Center mapping, staged cutover, and what to validate when simplifying a highly configurable ALM.

By traceunified ·

Migrating off PTC Codebeamer is often a configuration and cutover problem, not a blank-page rewrite. Codebeamer is a serious, highly configurable ALM. Teams leave when implementation overhead, ecosystem gravity, or a missing native MBSE/SBOM thread outweighs that flexibility.

What to export from Codebeamer

  1. Trackers / work items — requirements and related types via ReqIF where your Codebeamer configuration supports a clean export.
  2. Associations and trace links — confirm relationship types you need for coverage and impact analysis survive the export.
  3. Baselines and release evidence — archive signed packages and historical baselines per your QMS.
  4. Test and risk content — export CSV/Excel if ReqIF does not carry them with the fidelity you need.
  5. Custom fields and workflows — inventory what is truly required vs accumulated configuration; migration is a chance to simplify.

Import into traceunified

Use the Import Center the same way as any ReqIF/CSV migration. Full UI steps: Import requirements and ReqIF & field mapping.

  1. Upload the ReqIF (or CSV / Excel / Word) file and set the Import Destination.
  2. Simplify the model in the mapping. Map only the attributes and states you will enforce going forward — carrying every custom field “just in case” recreates the config tax.
  3. For ReqIF, set ReqIF Type Mapping so Codebeamer types land on your item types.
  4. Enable Import Traceability Links when associations are in the file.
  5. Preview, then commit. Reuse the mapping for the next tracker/project.
  6. Bring tests/risk via a second CSV/Excel import; bring SBOMs as CycloneDX or SPDX (SBOM import).

Cutover pattern

  1. Import one program end-to-end — authoring, coverage, suspect flags, and a sample approval path before portfolio cutover.
  2. Rebuild what was never one database — architecture in Cameo, tests elsewhere, SBOM in a scanner — decide what becomes native.
  3. Parallel run — Codebeamer read-only for in-flight releases; new authoring in traceunified.
  4. Preserve outbound exit — confirm ReqIF/CSV export from Export before you decommission Codebeamer.

Validation checklist after cutover

  • Item counts and critical trackers accounted for
  • Link coverage for a known subsystem matches prior understanding
  • Workflow states map to governed transitions you intend to keep
  • Part 11 / audit path exercised on a controlled change (if in scope)
  • Reports or evidence packages regenerable for the next audit

When staying on Codebeamer is right

If deep configurability and PTC ecosystem fit are winning for you, and the implementation cost is already paid, staying can be correct. Migration pays off when the cost of change is lower than the cost of carrying that configuration forever — or when you need SysML and SBOM on the same thread without another integration layer.
