Migration

Migrate from Jama Connect: a practical ReqIF path

How to migrate requirements and traceability links from Jama Connect — ReqIF export, field mapping, staged cutover, and what to validate after you land in a new system of record.

Migrating off Jama Connect does not have to be a big-bang rewrite. Most regulated teams succeed with a project-by-project cutover: prove the model on one program, then expand.

This guide assumes you are moving to a system that imports ReqIF (and usually CSV/Excel/Word) with field mapping — including traceunified.

What to export from Jama

  1. Requirements and hierarchies — via ReqIF where possible so structure and attributes travel together.
  2. Traceability relationships — confirm your export includes links you care about (derive, satisfy, verify, mitigate, etc.).
  3. Baselines / versions you must retain as evidence — export or archive per your QMS; do not rely on tribal knowledge.
  4. Supporting artifacts — risk, test cases, and attachments may need a second pass (CSV/Excel) depending on what Jama and the destination support.

Import pattern that works

  1. Map fields deliberately. Priority, status, type, and custom attributes rarely share names 1:1. Map before you commit.
  2. Bring links with items. A requirements dump without relationships recreates the spreadsheet problem you are leaving.
  3. Start with one project. Validate authoring, coverage views, suspect-on-change, and a sample Part 11 signature path before you move the portfolio.
  4. Rebuild what was never native in Jama. If architecture lived in Cameo and tests in TestRail, decide whether those become native records in the destination or stay integrated — that decision drives the rest of the migration design.

Validation checklist after cutover

  • Sample of critical requirements present with correct IDs/attributes
  • Trace links intact for a known subsystem
  • Coverage / gap view matches the previous program’s understanding
  • Audit trail and e-signature path exercised on a controlled change
  • Export path out (ReqIF/CSV) confirmed — never lock yourself in

Parallel run vs hard cutover

Many teams run Jama read-only for a release or two while the new system is the system of record for new work. That reduces risk without doubling data entry forever.
